Hello! Me and a few of my friends were interested in running our own minecraft server but we would need to have it hosted externally (like from here). So we were wondering if we did pay for a server, would steps would we have to do to get the server running? Thank you

Hi,
Here is a great tutorial for setting up a Minecraft server - http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Tutor … p_a_server
Though for people to join when ever you will need to run the server 24/7, it would be cheaper in the long run to rent a server - http://www.gameserverhost.net/game/Minecraft
Good luck.

Thank you! So would renting a server be the same process ? And would I need to port forward the minecraft port?

Hi,
If you were to rent a server, you don't need to port forward at all. The server will be hosted in a data center and not in your house, which will remain on 24/7 so you can join when ever. The provider will give you access to a web control panel where you can upload mods and restart/backup your server.
Thanks

It's very easy getting your own server online, at least if you manage forwarding your ports. From there everything is easy imo. Then the question is if your computer is good enough to run your server. If it is just you and a few friends it most likely is if it's not from the stone age. However, if you plan on running a larger server it's almost always recommended to let someone host it for you for like $10-20 a month, that said if you don't know how to run it on your own server. Goodluck.

It's also worth mentioning that Minecraft hosting prices have noticeably dropped during the past few years, so hosting from home is no longer the only option if you're on a budget.
